Bill and Arlene met in Germany in 1958 while Bill was serving with the US Army and Arlene was teaching English in an elementary school there. Of course they met at a USO dance and fell in love forever to this day. Bill was from TX where his family still has a huge ranch, and Arlene was from Kenosha. They settled on traveling back and forth between the two "ranches" and raised their family happily ever after.
Bill, now in the autumn of his life is tasked with moving everything from Kenosha to his TX ranch. This Grundig needed some restoration from the great 62 years of service and therefore Bill gave it to me to sell for him and Arlene. She would listen to Opera whenever she could, and Bill would play country. It's a cautionary tale, and just adds color to this impressive unit. The Grundig Majestic SO 172 is world renown for its cutting German Bauhaus ala Danish design. Very unique for consoles in its day, let alone the survival of these gems now. Our goal at Groovy Wood Studios is to bring these to market very reasonably. Grundig SO 172 Console Cabinet.
Grundig radio, operating, powers up, lights up, and powers the turntable and accessories; with typical average sound. (There are options for fully rebuilding and restoring the radio component with new capacitors, vacuum tubes and other components for a full refresh, at an additional premium, inquire). All in and all told, this is still a great way to get a very nostalgic vintage piece at a very reasonable spend. Hi, I'm Steve and I own a boutique audiophile studio in downtown Madison called Groovy Wood Studios, where we specialize in acquiring, restoring, refurb'ing and retrofitting stereo consoles. We are especially daft when it comes to Grundig, Telefunken, Metz, Blaupunkt, and other German units, let alone the total Americana such as Zenith, RCA, Motorola, The Fisher, HH Scott, and McIntosh. We're conveniently located on Willy St (Williamson St if we're being proper and formal). We currently have over 25 MCM consoles on site, making us the largest specialist in the Midwest.More than half the time we have customers come for one unit but leave with a different one. Sometimes they have left with 2. Most of my units here sell before they ever get listed, as customers send friends at great frequency to visit and see what we just picked up.
Units are sometimes listed as projects with a menu of refurbishment options to follow. This allows us to get great vintage MCM units into customers homes without breaking the bank. For the discerning customer that wants a fully restored unit, including all components, capacitors, tubes, coils, and such we do offer that as a premium service. Again, it is our goal to offer reasonable consoles at a reasonable price, but also offer the highest quality console worked on by our renown network of technicians who do this full time, and various states of restoration in between.
Yes you can have it your way. We do sell consignment, for estate auctions, customers, associates, friends and family. Our network is vast in acquiring units coast to coast and as my wife says, it always makes for an interesting happy hour to listen to various MCM artifacts from the past every week.
We meet customers by appointment only, and ask that we all "mask up" for the meanwhile. Appointments are important for us as it insures we are here when you plan to be here. Otherwise we are busy in the shop restoring, or out on the road acquiring, or just chilling with the music turned up so loud we won't hear the door knock. So don't be shy, reach out and come on by!We are often asked if we have a repair department to work on non-Groovy Wood consoles. The answer is yes, we will take in units as time permits to do such work. Also please note, Groovy Wood Studios supports the Phoenix Memorial Project, a 501 (c)(3) organization, with this venture. In much the same way Groovy Woods rehabs forgotten units, the Phoenix Memorial Project looks to heal and rehab individuals struggling with various social trauma.
Proceeds from the sales of Groovy Wood Studios units benefits the Phoenix Memorial Project. Thank you for your support.
